Population Genetics (WP6.1)

The objectives of this workpackage were (i) to derive primary cells and make experiments to transform them into cell lines. Of particular interest were mammary cells (in relation with the work on mastitis in WP7 ) and intestinal chicken cells, in relation with the work achieved in WP7 on resistance  to Salmonella. Availability of such cells or even more cells line allowed in vitro studies which are of peculiar interest and, power, (ii) to achieve complementary genotypings and phenotypings in order to finer map some QTLs of interest and to investigate, through comparative analysis of different traits of resistance, host-parthogen interaction, (iii) Genetic epidemiology was considered as an important tool to allow an optimal genetic improvement of host resistance.

WP Objectives:

  • To make ultimate attempts to derive primary cells and transform them into cell lines, with particular interest on intestinal and dendritic chicken cells, in relation with the work achieved in WP7 on resistance to Salmonella
  • To achieve complementary genotypings and phenotypings to fine map some QTL and investigate, through comparative analysis of different traits of resistance, host-pathogen interaction and interest of some genetic resources
  • To derive new genetic-epidemiological models as an important tool to allow an optimal genetic improvement of host resistance

WP Achievements:

  • Inventories of genetic resources and recorded disease traits
  • Phenotyping of immune responses in genetic models for disease resistance
